A 2004 water heater in the attic failed to ignite and was replaced with a new unit, expansion tank, and flood stop device. During the visit, a second water heater's venting was found disconnected, creating a carbon monoxide hazard. The venting was safely reconnected and secured. The homeowner received repair and replacement bids for the second unit.
We were called out to a home for a water heater in the attic above the garage that had a failure to ignite. The unit was manufactured in 2004, so after a discussion with the homeowner, we decided it would be best to replace the unit. We are going to be adding an expansion tank as well as a flood stop device to ensure that if this device ever fails, it will automatically shut off. While on site, we also had a discussion about the other water heater. I suggested we go over there and take a look at it to ensure nothing was going on. Upon entering the attic, I immediately noticed that the venting for the second water heater was completely disconnected. It immediately shut off the security system once the attic door was opened because of the carbon monoxide content in the air.
Once we noticed the second water heater's venting was disconnected, I informed the homeowner that we needed to clear the area. It immediately set off the alarm, so he had to turn off the alarm with the alarm company temporarily. I reconnected the venting while wearing proper PPE to ensure we did not get carbon monoxide poisoning. I'm having him leave the attic door and the garage door open to the garage to ensure that the carbon monoxide can safely vent into the atmosphere. After reconnecting the venting for the heater, screwing the venting in place, and securing the venting between the rafters above, I informed the homeowner that everything was now safe. We did find a couple of issues with that unit and the unit from 2015, so I gave him bids to either repair or replace the second unit. We went ahead and scheduled the first unit to be replaced for now. He is going to talk to his significant other before determining whether or not he would like to repair or replace the second unit. Pictures of everything are attached to the job.
